The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has selected former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for the 2027 general election.

The party announced the development in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, following what it described as extensive consultations with party stakeholders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and representatives from across the country.

According to the ADC, Amaechi’s emergence followed the successful conclusion of the party’s presidential primary, where he reportedly finished as runner-up and secured significant support from party members nationwide.

The party said the Atiku-Amaechi ticket reflects its determination to present Nigerians with experienced leadership capable of addressing the nation’s economic, political and security challenges.

In the statement, the ADC described both politicians as seasoned administrators with extensive records in public service, noting that their combined experience cuts across governance, party administration and national development.

The party highlighted Amaechi’s political career, which spans several decades, including his tenure as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation.

It noted that his experience in both the legislative and executive arms of government would bring additional strength to the presidential ticket.

The ADC further argued that Amaechi’s influence in the South-South region and his political reach across Southern Nigeria would complement Atiku’s national appeal and enhance the party’s chances in the 2027 presidential race.

“The proposed partnership between Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance; it is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges,” the statement said.

The party added that the ticket would provide Nigerians with what it described as a credible alternative focused on economic recovery, job creation, national unity and improved governance.

The ADC also called on party faithful, coalition partners, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to support the ticket as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.

Political observers say the announcement is likely to intensify discussions around coalition politics and electoral alignments ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive presidential contest.
