A Tribute to Taraku Youth –By Matthew Ma

Three years ago, I wrote an open letter to Governor Hyacinth Alia, passionately urging him to take action to revive the Taraku Mills Company. This appeal was rooted in my belief that the mills represented not only economic potential but also hope for many families in our community, including my own. Initially, I doubted that the governor and his cabinet would take my plea for the revival of Taraku Mills seriously. However, I was recently delighted to hear from a fellow priest, who, aware of my earlier efforts, shared uplifting news. He informed me that the letter I had written shortly before Governor Alia took office had begun to produce positive results. Intrigued, I sought more details, and he enthusiastically relayed that the governor had begun efforts to revitalize the Taraku Mills. This development brought me great joy, as the mills were once a cornerstone of our community’s economy. Many individuals, including several members of my own family, experienced significant financial hardship while waiting for their gratuities—promised but never delivered—following the decline of the mills.

This reflection extends beyond Governor Alia’s strategic initiative to revive the Taraku Mills; it also allows me to express my profound gratitude and admiration for the vibrant and dynamic youth of Taraku, who played a crucial role in ensuring that nothing at the company was vandalized. Therefore, to fully grasp the significance of this revival, it is essential to explore the rich historical context surrounding the mill’s establishment. Understanding the origins of the Taraku Mills will shed light on the unwavering dedication of the Taraku youth to preserving this vital institution. Their efforts to protect the mill demonstrate not only their deep understanding of its importance but also a commitment to maintaining its legacy for generations to come.

Taraku Mills was established in the late 1980s by the Benue State Government as a flagship agro-industrial initiative. Located in Taraku in the Gwer East Local Government Area, the factory was designed to add value to Benue’s abundant agricultural produce by processing soybeans, maize, beniseed, and other crops into vegetable oil, animal feed, and industrial raw materials. At its peak, Taraku Mills was among Nigeria’s largest agro-processing industries, employing hundreds of workers and providing a reliable market for thousands of farmers in Benue and neighboring states.

Unfortunately, the company’s fortunes began to wane due to poor management, insufficient maintenance, inconsistent policies, and a lack of sustained investment. Successive administrations struggled to keep the factory operational, leading to a gradual decline in production until it ultimately ceased. Over the years, several attempts were made to lease or revitalize the company, but none achieved lasting success. The once-thriving industrial hub fell silent, leaving workers unemployed, farmers without a dependable market, and the surrounding community deprived of the economic activity that had sustained it for decades.

For over a decade, Taraku Mills stood abandoned. Despite various governments occasionally promising to revive the factory, these commitments never led to meaningful action. The buildings remained vacant, the machinery collected dust, and many people gradually lost hope that the company would ever operate again. In this context, countless citizens, including me, continued to advocate for its revival, believing that restoring Taraku Mills would reinvigorate agriculture, create jobs, and bolster Benue State’s economy. Therefore, it is encouraging to see tangible efforts underway to reinstate this historic company after years of neglect.

Taraku youth have shown remarkable resilience and unwavering commitment despite their company’s neglect. As the once-thriving Taraku Mills fell into disrepair and disuse, the youth recognized the escalating threat from vandals and scrap dealers eager to dismantle the factory’s remnants for quick profit. They knew that if the essential machinery and infrastructure were stolen or destroyed, any hope of revitalizing the company—and, by extension, the local economy—would be lost forever. With a profound connection to their community, these young men and women united to form a protective network to safeguard what remained of the factory. Their vigilance went beyond mere physical defense; they actively engaged local authorities and potential investors in conversations about the importance of preserving the site. Through their dedication and relentless efforts, they not only thwarted those seeking to exploit the factory’s decline but also inspired a renewed sense of hope within their community.

As the revival of the Taraku Mills comes into focus, it is essential to recognize the remarkable foresight, significant sacrifices, and unwavering determination of the young guardians of the community. Their contributions extend far beyond the mere preservation of bricks and mortar; they have been instrumental in safeguarding the economic future of their neighborhood. By championing this cause, they have underscored the vital role grassroots movements play in fostering meaningful change.

These young individuals have exemplified an inspiring form of patriotism, showing that genuine commitment to one’s home and community often springs from the hearts and actions of ordinary citizens. While their contributions may go unrecognized, they embody the essence of civic duty. Through selfless, strategic choices—often made amid uncertainty—they set a powerful example for others. They remind us that the most significant impacts often arise not from the pursuit of immediate rewards or recognition, but from a profound dedication to the common good and an unwavering belief in their community’s potential. I express my heartfelt appreciation to Taraku’s youth for their steadfast commitment, resilience, and enduring love for their homeland. History ought to remember that long before the machines of Taraku Mills began to stir again, a courageous and dedicated group of young men and women stood watch over the abandoned factory, protecting it from vandalism and destruction. Their vigilance preserved a vital economic asset that might otherwise have been lost forever. Today, as the revival of Taraku Mills becomes a reality, it is fitting to acknowledge that their sacrifice and sense of responsibility helped make this moment possible. They were not merely guarding buildings and machinery; they were safeguarding the hopes, livelihoods, and future prosperity of their community. For this noble service, they deserve the sincere gratitude and admiration of all the people of Benue State.

Another reason I express my profound gratitude to the youth of Taraku is simple yet significant. They understood that Taraku Mills was more than an abandoned factory; it was a symbol of hope and a strategic economic asset for the entire state. At a time when many public institutions across the country are being stripped of equipment by vandals and scrap dealers, the Taraku youth chose a different path. They stood guard over the factory, protecting its buildings, machinery, and infrastructure from destruction or looting.

Their vigilance preserved the very foundation that made Taraku Mills’ ongoing revival possible. Had they allowed the factory to be vandalized, the cost and difficulty of restoring it would have been far greater, if not impossible. Their actions demonstrated remarkable foresight, selflessness, and a deep commitment to their community’s welfare. For this reason, I express my heartfelt gratitude to the youth of Taraku. Their sacrifice may not have attracted widespread attention at the time, but history should remember them as faithful custodians of a priceless public asset. By protecting Taraku Mills during its years of abandonment, they safeguarded the hopes of farmers, the aspirations of young people seeking employment, and the economic future of Taraku and Benue State as a whole.

May their inspiring example serve as a beacon for other communities, encouraging them to take an active role in safeguarding public assets. It is crucial to understand that what may appear as neglected or abandoned today has the potential to blossom into a source of prosperity for tomorrow. Their dedication not only revitalizes a critical local industry but also fuels a sense of pride that can uplift an entire community.

The youth of Taraku deserve the profound gratitude of every citizen of Benue State. They merit not only incentives but also tangible employment opportunities, whether that involves harvesting soybeans, assisting with loading these crops for production, or ensuring that facilities are kept clean and well-maintained to prevent environmental degradation. May their exemplary actions inspire other communities to safeguard public assets, recognizing that what appears neglected today could become a source of prosperity tomorrow.
