ADC crisis deepens as PRP invites Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso to join forces
The People’s Redemption Party urges Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to unite under its platform amid the ADC leadership crisis.
The People’s Redemption Party (PRP) has appealed to leading opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, to unite under its platform in a bid to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
The party’s Lagos State Chairman, James Adeshina, made the call on Thursday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), while reacting to the leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He described the situation within the ADC—recently embraced by some opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections—as a major blow to opposition unity.
“Nigeria’s political landscape is once again witnessing turbulence—this time within the African Democratic Congress (ADC),” he said.
“What should have been a strong alternative platform is now entangled in internal disputes, leadership struggles, and uncertainty.”
Adeshina warned that the ongoing crisis reflects a broader issue of fragmentation among opposition parties, which he said weakens their ability to challenge the ruling establishment.
“This development is not just unfortunate; it is a stark reminder of a deeper problem within opposition politics in Nigeria—fragmentation,” he added.
“At a time when the nation urgently needs a strong, united front to safeguard democracy, internal crises like the one in ADC only weaken the collective ability of opposition forces.”
He cautioned that such divisions could create room for unchecked dominance and heighten fears of Nigeria drifting toward a one-party system.
According to him, with both the Peoples Democratic Party and ADC grappling with internal challenges, the PRP offers a more stable and disciplined alternative.
Adeshina urged opposition leaders to rethink their approach and prioritise collaboration over rivalry.
“I therefore extend a sincere invitation to key figures and stakeholders within ADC and beyond—leaders such as Atiku Abubakar, Rauf Aregbesola, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and others—to approach PRP,” he said.
“All emerging voices in the ADC need to consider aligning with a more stable and historically grounded platform: the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).”
He stressed that while the ADC is facing internal instability, the PRP has maintained a long-standing reputation for unity and ideological clarity.
“The contrast is clear. While ADC is currently grappling with internal instability, PRP remains the oldest political party in Nigeria with a consistent legacy of discipline, unity, and ideological focus,” he said.
“Notably, PRP has operated without the kind of internal rancour that has plagued many other parties. In a time of uncertainty, stability is not just an advantage—it is a necessity.”
Adeshina emphasised that Nigeria needs a consolidated opposition capable of providing a credible alternative.
“The truth is simple: Nigeria does not need multiple weak opposition parties; it needs one strong, united force capable of challenging the status quo and restoring balance to the political system.”
He described the ADC crisis as a wake-up call for political actors to rise above party loyalties and focus on national interest.
“To the leaders affected, this is not about abandoning your ideals—it is about preserving them in a more viable structure,” he said.
“It is about ensuring that your vision for Nigeria does not get lost in internal conflicts or political fragmentation.”
He also urged Nigerians to support unity among credible leaders.
“History will not remember the parties we defended—it will remember the country we saved.
“The time to act is now. The opportunity to unite is here.”
Reaffirming PRP’s legacy, he noted that the party has sustained a strong ideological foundation for 47 years and remains well-positioned for future elections.
“We encourage opposition leaders to rescue Nigeria by joining PRP, a party existing for 47 years with strong ideology and unity,” he said.
He added that the PRP has the potential to win both the 2027 presidential election and the Lagos State governorship if opposition forces rally behind it.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced on Wednesday the de-recognition of ADC National Chairman David Mark, National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, and others, citing a court order.
