The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is set to step down from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet after receiving approval to contest the Oyo State governorship election.

According to a statement issued Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Tunji Bolaji, the minister secured the President’s consent during a Tuesday meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The statement noted that Adelabu also used the meeting to brief the President on progress made in the power sector since he assumed office more than two years ago.

President Tinubu approved the minister’s political ambition, clearing the way for his expected resignation from the Federal Executive Council.

Adelabu is expected to formally leave office after completing ongoing engagements aimed at sustaining key reforms in the electricity sector.

His exit comes against the backdrop of persistent challenges in the power sector, including gas shortages, infrastructure limitations, and unresolved financial obligations.

At the meeting, he presented a report detailing reforms introduced under his leadership, focusing on stabilising electricity generation, strengthening transmission systems, and improving overall efficiency.

He also unveiled the National Integrated Electricity Policy and its Strategic Implementation Plan, described as a roadmap for long-term sector transformation.

President Tinubu praised the minister for establishing a strong foundation for reform and acknowledged progress made under his watch.

Adelabu thanked the President for the opportunity to serve, reaffirming his commitment to national development as he prepares to pursue his governorship ambition.
