When Google was officially incorporated as a company on September 4, 1998, few people imagined that it would fundamentally change how the world accessed information. Even before then, its underlying search technology had been taking shape through the “BackRub” project, which began in 1996. Today, it is almost impossible to imagine research, journalism, business, education or even everyday problem-solving without Google.

Yet, when Google first became popular, it was met with suspicion, ridicule and outright dismissal by many people. It became common to hear statements such as, “Na Google dem take do am,” whenever someone submitted a well-researched assignment, produced an impressive presentation or published a comprehensive report. The implication was clear: using Google somehow diminished the value of one’s work. The assumption was that technology had done all the thinking.

Fast-forward to today, and history appears to be repeating itself. Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially generative AI platforms like ChatGPT and similar technologies, has become the latest target of this familiar prejudice. Whenever someone produces outstanding content, develops innovative business ideas or solves complex professional challenges with the assistance of AI, there are those who are quick to dismiss the achievement with comments like, “AI wrote it,” or “He didn’t do the work himself.” Such criticisms reveal a fundamental misunderstanding, not only of AI, but of how technology has always advanced human civilization.

The issue before us is not whether AI is capable of assisting human beings. It undoubtedly is. The real question is whether we are wise enough to use it as an amplifier of human intelligence rather than viewing it as an enemy of human creativity. Unfortunately, too many people are choosing ridicule over understanding. That is a costly mistake.

Imagine someone refusing to travel by car because walking is more “original.” It sounds absurd, yet this is precisely the logic behind those who condemn AI-assisted work simply because technology makes certain tasks easier and faster.

No sensible entrepreneur chooses to trek from Lagos to Abuja merely to prove independence. No surgeon rejects modern medical equipment simply because earlier generations performed operations with fewer tools. No architect abandons computer-aided design to return to pencil and paper simply to appear more authentic. 

Without any iota of exaggeration, technology has always existed to extend human capability. The car does not eliminate the driver. The computer does not eliminate the programmer. The calculator does not eliminate mathematics. Likewise, AI does not eliminate human intelligence. Rather, it multiplies what intelligence already exists. This distinction is crucial.

Perhaps the greatest misconception surrounding AI is the belief that anyone can simply ask it a question and instantly receive world-class results. Reality tells a different story. Anyone who has spent considerable time using generative AI knows that the quality of the output depends heavily on the quality of the prompt. AI does not magically read minds. It responds to instructions, context, clarity and direction supplied by the user.

In other words, poor thinking produces poor prompts. Poor prompts produce poor outputs. Excellent prompts produce excellent results. And excellent prompts come from knowledgeable people. This explains why experienced journalists obtain better AI-assisted reports than individuals unfamiliar with news writing. It explains why accomplished lawyers generate stronger legal drafts than non-lawyers. It explains why skilled marketers develop better advertising campaigns with AI than those who know little about branding. It equally explains why seasoned lecturers produce more academically sound materials than students hoping AI will think on their behalf. 

To be clear, AI rewards expertise. It does not replace it. The assumption that AI removes the need for competence is therefore one of the greatest myths of our time. If anything, AI exposes incompetence even more quickly.

Someone who lacks subject knowledge cannot easily identify factual errors, logical inconsistencies or misleading conclusions generated by AI. Such a person becomes vulnerable to misinformation because they lack the expertise to evaluate the output critically. Conversely, professionals who possess deep knowledge in their respective fields use AI differently. They challenge it. They refine it. They question it. They verify its claims. They reshape its output.The final product therefore becomes a collaboration between human judgment and machine efficiency. This is exactly how AI should be used.

Given the enormous benefits that are inherent in the use of AI, it is not an exaggeration to opine that entrepreneurs, in particular, have much to gain from embracing this mindset. This is as running a business today involves managing operations, developing marketing strategies, responding to customers, analyzing data, preparing financial projections and monitoring competitors. AI can significantly reduce the time required for many of these tasks, allowing entrepreneurs to focus more on innovation, customer relationships and strategic decision-making.

However, AI cannot replace entrepreneurial instincts. It cannot negotiate complex business relationships with emotional intelligence. It cannot build trust with customers. It cannot read the subtle cultural signals that influence consumer behavior in different markets. Those remain uniquely human strengths.

In a similar vein, academicians also stand at an important crossroads. Some educators see AI merely as a cheating tool. While concerns about academic integrity are legitimate, reducing AI to an instrument of misconduct ignores its enormous educational potential. Used responsibly, AI can help students understand difficult concepts, generate multiple explanations for complex theories, improve academic writing, summarize extensive literature and stimulate critical thinking through intelligent dialogue. The responsibility of educators should therefore shift from merely asking, “Did AI write this?” to asking, “Did the student demonstrate understanding?” Education has never been about memorization alone. It has always been about learning how to think.

At this juncture, it is germane to opine that AI cannot replace thinking. But it can certainly improve learning. In fact, professionals across every industry face a similar reality. Lawyers can draft faster. Doctors can review research more efficiently. Engineers can explore design alternatives. Accountants can automate repetitive analyses. Journalists can organize interviews, verify public information and identify reporting angles more quickly. Public relations practitioners can test messaging before campaigns are launched. Advertisers can generate creative concepts in minutes rather than days. None of these developments removes the need for human expertise. Instead, they raise the standard expected from professionals.

History consistently shows that societies that reject useful technology eventually find themselves overtaken by those willing to embrace it responsibly. This should concern developing economies like Nigeria. Our greatest challenge is no longer whether AI will become widespread. That question has already been answered. It will. The real question is whether Nigerians will become creators using AI or merely consumers watching others innovate.

Unfortunately, if the culture of ridiculing AI users continues, we risk discouraging curiosity and experimentation, the very qualities that drive technological progress. We have seen this before.

Despite Google’s availability for nearly three decades, many people still use only a tiny fraction of its capabilities. They search inefficiently, ignore advanced search operators, overlook scholarly databases and fail to evaluate the credibility of sources. Consequently, they derive only a fraction of the platform’s immense value. The lesson is clear. Access to technology does not automatically translate into competence. Competence comes from learning. The same principle applies to AI.

Owning access to ChatGPT or any other AI platform does not make someone productive. Knowing how to ask intelligent questions, verify information, provide context and refine outputs is what separates ordinary users from exceptional ones.

Prompt engineering, critical thinking and domain expertise are rapidly becoming valuable professional skills. Ironically, those who mock AI users today may eventually discover that the future job market rewards precisely those competencies. Instead of ridiculing colleagues who use AI, we should ask them what they have learned. Instead of dismissing AI-assisted work, we should evaluate its quality. Instead of resisting technological change, we should develop the literacy required to use it wisely.

Throughout history, every transformative technology has generated fear before acceptance. The printing press was resisted. Calculators were once controversial in classrooms. Computers were initially viewed with suspicion. The internet itself was dismissed by many before becoming indispensable. AI is simply the latest chapter in that continuing story. But unlike previous technological revolutions, this one is advancing at extraordinary speed. Standing still is no longer a neutral choice. It is a decision to fall behind.

Against the foregoing backdrop, it is expedient to opine that none of this suggests that AI should be trusted blindly. Human oversight remains essential. AI systems can produce inaccuracies, fabricate references, misunderstand context and reflect biases embedded in training data. Responsible users must therefore fact-check outputs, exercise sound judgment and remain accountable for the final work. In that sense, AI resembles an exceptionally fast research assistant, not an infallible expert. The responsibility still rests with the human being.

It will belong to those who understand that the greatest technology has always been the human mind, and that artificial intelligence, at its best, is simply one more tool that allows that mind to achieve even greater things.
