Arsenal Go Top Again as Eberechi Eze Fires Winner Against Newcastle United
Arsenal move back to the top of the Premier League after Eberechi Eze’s goal secures victory over Newcastle.
A brilliant strike from Eberechi Eze lifted Arsenal back to the top of the Premier League with a narrow 1-0 win over Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal had dropped from first place earlier in the week after Manchester City defeated Burnley, but Eze’s 10th goal of the campaign restored their advantage.
The victory moves Arsenal three points clear of City, although Guardiola’s side still have a game in hand.
“No team has made four finals in a row. It’s extraordinary and hopefully we can arrive with a good momentum,” said Pep Guardiola earlier as City secured their FA Cup final spot.
Arsenal needed the win after a dip in form that saw them lose four of their previous six matches, including a damaging defeat to City.
The north London side are aiming to avoid a repeat of past seasons, where they surrendered title leads to City in 2023 and 2024.
Eze’s decisive goal came in the ninth minute, as he was left unmarked to curl a powerful effort into the top corner following a well-worked set-piece.
The strike highlighted Arsenal’s strength from dead-ball situations, with the team setting a Premier League record of 17 goals from corners in a single season.
Newcastle started brightly but failed to capitalise on early chances, with Will Osula and Bruno Guimaraes going close.
Arsenal also faced setbacks, with Kai Havertz and Eze both forced off due to injury.
The hosts lost momentum in the second half and were nearly punished when Yoane Wissa missed from close range.
Late pressure from Newcastle, including a header from Dan Burn, tested goalkeeper David Raya, but Arsenal held firm.
Mikel Arteta’s side now have the opportunity to extend their lead further when they face Fulham, while City’s next league match comes against Everton.
As the title race intensifies, Arsenal’s narrow win could prove decisive in their pursuit of a first league crown since 2004.
