There has been a prolonged agitation in parts of Bauchi State over power rotation and fairness in leadership composition to give all sections of the state a sense of belonging. Since 1999, however, the governorship has largely favoured one region over others. The 2027 governorship election therefore presents an opportunity for Bauchi Central Senatorial District to produce the next governor.

Historically, Bauchi State has produced notable personalities who have contributed immensely to the state and the nation. One of such icons was the late Mallam Sa’adu Zungur, the renowned poet, writer, nationalist and former Secretary-General of the defunct National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC). Through his literary works and political activism, he contributed to Nigeria’s struggle for independence and championed social justice and educational reforms.

Widely regarded as the father of radical politics in Northern Nigeria, Sa’adu Zungur was also among the first government-sponsored northerners to study pharmacy outside the region. In contemporary Bauchi politics, Senator Halliru Dauda Jika has emerged as one of the leading figures from Bauchi Central. His political career began at the grassroots level when he represented Ganjuwa West Constituency in the Bauchi State House of Assembly between 2007 and 2011.

At the age of 31, he became Speaker of the State Assembly, a rare achievement among his contemporaries. The position served as a foundation for his political growth and leadership development.

Following his tenure as Speaker, the people of Ganjuwa/Darazo Federal Constituency elected him into the House of Representatives in 2015. During his time in the National Assembly, he maintained a relatively independent political stance and avoided the political disagreements that existed between the administration of former Governor Mohammed Abubakar and some federal lawmakers from the state.

As a member of the House of Representatives, Senator Jika sponsored motions and bills and participated actively in legislative activities. His performance later earned him election to the Senate, where he represented Bauchi Central Senatorial District between 2019 and 2023. While chairing the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, he was associated with efforts aimed at improving the welfare of police personnel, including advocacy for improved salaries and welfare packages. He also facilitated employment opportunities for constituents and supported the establishment of the Police Academy in Kafin Madaki.

A graduate of Civil Engineering from Kaduna Polytechnic and an alumnus of Sardauna Memorial College, Kaduna, Senator Jika is also known for his interest in polo and traditional institutions, earning him the title of Dokajin Bauchi.

As the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in 2027, he projected himself as an advocate of youth empowerment, human capital development and inclusive governance.

Factors That May Favour Senator Jika in 2027: Senator Ningi Factor

One factor that may strengthen Senator Jika’s political prospects is his alliance with Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi, a prominent political figure in Bauchi State. Political observers believe that Senator Ningi’s extensive political network across the state could prove beneficial if both leaders maintain their relationship ahead of the 2027 election.

Relationship with the Bauchi Emirate

Supporters of Senator Jika also point to his strong ties with the Bauchi Emirate and his longstanding relationship with many residents of the state capital. Having assisted numerous individuals through educational support and empowerment programmes, he enjoys goodwill among many people within and outside his senatorial district.

The Bauchi–Katagum Dynamics

The political calculations surrounding Bauchi North and Bauchi Central may also shape the 2027 contest. Some analysts believe that voters seeking a shift in power rotation may support a candidate from Bauchi Central, while others argue that political alliances and party structures will ultimately determine the outcome.

Another factor often associated with Senator Jika is his accessibility to ordinary citizens. His supporters describe him as a politician who maintains close contact with the people and responds quickly to their concerns and requests.
