Beyond The Box: The Unreasonable Minds That Moved Humanity Forward -By Bamidele Williams

The next great breakthrough may come from a scientist whose hypothesis currently sounds absurd, an engineer whose prototype keeps failing, a doctor who refuses to accept that a particular disease is incurable, or a young person who looks at an old problem and simply asks, “Why can’t we do this differently?”

There is something fascinating about the people who change the world. They are often those who refuse to accept the world exactly as they found it. They look at what everyone else considers normal, inevitable or impossible and ask a deceptively simple question: Why?

Some reasonable man once said, “If God wanted humans to fly, He would have given us wings.”

Perhaps Orville and Wilbur Wright would have disagreed.

The Wright brothers were not satisfied with the idea that flight belonged exclusively to birds. They were bicycle mechanics who became obsessed with the possibility that a machine could carry human beings into the air and return them safely to the ground. In 1903, after years of experimentation and failure, they achieved powered, controlled flight.

They did not have wings. They had an idea.

Today, millions of people board aircraft without giving much thought to the extraordinary chain of events that made such a journey possible. We cross oceans in hours because two brothers were unreasonable enough to challenge a limitation that had existed for all of human history.

That is how progress often works.

Before electricity became an indispensable part of modern life, human beings lived with darkness as an ordinary reality. Then came inventors and scientists who believed that electrical energy could be harnessed and used to illuminate homes, streets and industries. Thomas Edison became one of the most famous figures in the development and commercialisation of practical electric lighting.

Today, we switch on a light almost instinctively. We rarely pause to consider that there was a time when the very idea would have sounded extraordinary.

The same can be said of communication.

There was a time when sending a message over a long distance meant waiting for a messenger, a letter or some other physical means of transportation. Then came the audacious idea that the human voice itself could be transmitted through wires.

Alexander Graham Bell and other pioneers of telecommunications helped turn that idea into reality.

Today, a child can make a video call to someone on another continent from a device small enough to fit into a pocket. What would have appeared magical to previous generations has become mundane.

The automobile followed a similar trajectory. For centuries, transportation depended heavily on human and animal power. Then Karl Benz and other pioneers began developing machines capable of moving themselves.

The idea was revolutionary.

Today, we complain about traffic jams caused by the very invention that once seemed impossible.

Perhaps the most profound examples, however, are found in medicine.

For much of human history, bacterial infections were among the great killers. Then, in 1928, Alexander Fleming noticed something unusual in his laboratory: a mould appeared to be inhibiting the growth of bacteria. What could easily have been dismissed as contamination became the discovery that ultimately led to penicillin and the antibiotic revolution.

The remarkable thing was not simply that Fleming observed something unusual. It was that he was curious enough to ask what it meant.

That curiosity has saved countless lives.

Medicine would continue to be transformed by people who refused to accept the limits of their time. The idea that an organ from one human being could be transplanted into another whose own organ had failed would once have sounded almost unimaginable. Yet in 1954, a team led by Joseph Murray performed the first successful long-term kidney transplant between identical twins.

Today, organ transplantation is an established part of modern medicine.

Again, the impossible became possible.

Then humanity looked beyond the Earth.

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy set an extraordinarily ambitious objective for the United States: to land a man on the Moon and return him safely to Earth before the end of the decade.

Think about that for a moment.

Humanity had only recently begun sending people into space, yet a political leader was proposing that human beings should travel hundreds of thousands of kilometres beyond Earth, land on another celestial body and return safely.

It was audacious. It was expensive. It was dangerous. It was, by every conventional measure, unreasonable.

But scientists and engineers took up the challenge.

Wernher von Braun and thousands of other scientists, engineers, technicians and astronauts contributed to the extraordinary technological effort that became the Apollo programme.

Then, in July 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon while Michael Collins orbited above them.

Humanity had done what generations before them could only dream about.

The pattern is difficult to miss.

The telephone was once unreasonable. Powered flight was unreasonable. The automobile was unreasonable. Antibiotics were once unimaginable. Computers were once enormous machines that occupied entire rooms. The internet was once largely the preserve of researchers and scientists. Space travel belonged to science fiction.

Today, these things are woven into the fabric of our lives.

And now we are standing at the beginning of another technological revolution, with artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, quantum computing and other emerging technologies challenging our understanding of what machines and human beings can accomplish.

This is why I have always found Shaw’s statement particularly profound.

“All progress depends on the unreasonable man.”

Of course, being unreasonable does not mean being irrational. It does not mean refusing to listen to evidence, ignoring facts or pursuing every wild idea simply because it is unconventional.

There is a difference between foolishness and visionary thinking.

The unreasonable person Shaw speaks of is the individual who refuses to accept that the way things are is necessarily the way things must remain.

Such people challenge assumptions.

They question traditions.

They experiment.

They fail.

They try again.

They are sometimes ridiculed.

And occasionally, they are told that what they are attempting cannot be done.

But the history of civilisation is littered with the remains of yesterday’s impossibilities.

This is why we must be careful about telling young people that something cannot be done simply because nobody has done it before.

There is a dangerous sentence that has probably killed more ideas than failure ever could:

“That’s not how it is done.”

Perhaps it is not.

Perhaps that is precisely the point.

There is, however, another box that deserves scrutiny: the box of religious dogmatism.

Religion can be a profound source of meaning, morality, compassion and hope, but when religious belief is turned into an unquestionable boundary around human inquiry, it can become another form of intellectual confinement. Throughout history, people have sometimes been told that certain questions should not be asked, certain ideas should not be explored and certain discoveries should not be pursued simply because they challenge established religious interpretations or the authority of those who claim to speak for God. The problem is not faith itself. The problem begins when human interpretation becomes so absolute that curiosity is treated as rebellion and honest questioning as unbelief. A God who created the human mind cannot be honoured by demanding that the mind be switched off. Faith and intellectual curiosity need not be enemies. One can believe deeply and still ask difficult questions. One can respect sacred convictions and still pursue knowledge. The box becomes dangerous when we begin to mistake our understanding of God for the limits of God’s creation.

Every generation inherits a world built by the previous generation. But it also inherits problems that the previous generation could not solve. The responsibility of each generation is not merely to preserve what it inherited, but to improve upon it.

Someone must be willing to ask the uncomfortable questions.

Someone must be willing to challenge the established order.

Someone must be willing to imagine a road where everyone else sees a wall.

That person may be mocked before being celebrated.

The Wright brothers were not the last people to be considered unreasonable. They certainly will not be the last.

The next great breakthrough may come from a scientist whose hypothesis currently sounds absurd, an engineer whose prototype keeps failing, a doctor who refuses to accept that a particular disease is incurable, or a young person who looks at an old problem and simply asks, “Why can’t we do this differently?”

Perhaps that is why we should not be too quick to dismiss unreasonable ideas.

Some will fail. Many should fail.

But somewhere among those unreasonable ideas may be the breakthrough that changes everything.

The world has always needed people who are courageous enough to imagine beyond the boundaries of their time.

So, by all means, think outside the box.

But perhaps we can go one step further.

Don’t just think outside the box.

Think without boxes.
