Brighton Begin Premier League Season With Stunning 4-0 Win Over Aston Villa
Brighton thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 at the Amex Stadium as Maxim de Cuyper scored twice and Jack Hinshelwood netted a brace.
Brighton made a spectacular start to the new Premier League season on Sunday, dismantling Aston Villa 4-0 at the Amex Stadium in a match that saw the visitors reduced to 10 men.
The hosts raced into the lead after just eight minutes when Maxim de Cuyper’s shot struck the post and went in off Villa defender Victor Lindelof.
De Cuyper struck again 10 minutes later to double Brighton’s advantage and put the Seagulls firmly in control.
Villa, fresh from finishing fourth in England’s top flight last season and winning the Europa League, struggled to recover as Brighton added two more goals in quick succession.
Jack Hinshelwood scored twice within two minutes to give Brighton a commanding 4-0 lead before half-time.
Villa had initially threatened to take the lead, with Emiliano Buendia going close inside five minutes after stealing possession, only for his shot to narrowly miss the bottom corner.
But Brighton took advantage of a defensive error. Pau Torres’ blind pass into his own penalty area fell to De Cuyper, whose effort hit the post before deflecting off Lindelof and into the net.
The Seagulls then doubled their advantage when Georginio Rutter raced behind the Villa defence and pulled the ball back for De Cuyper to score from close range.
Brighton’s third came before the half-hour mark. De Cuyper’s cross from the left was knocked back across goal by Diego Gomez, allowing Hinshelwood to tap in.
Hinshelwood completed his brace only a minute later after Yasin Ayari won possession from Joao Gomes inside the Villa penalty area and created the opportunity.
Villa’s misery deepened shortly before the interval when Gomes, who was already on a yellow card, kicked out at Rutter. A VAR review resulted in a straight red card for the Villa debutant.
Despite being a man down, Villa avoided further punishment in the second half as Brighton failed to add to their four-goal advantage.
The second half ended without a goal, but Brighton had already done more than enough to secure an emphatic opening-day victory.
