Danny Welbeck netted a brace as Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Liverpool 2-1 at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, putting a dent in Liverpool’s pursuit of a top-five Premier League finish.

Brighton, buoyed by a 4-0 midweek victory over Galatasaray in the Champions League, took the lead in the 14th minute when Welbeck scored his 11th Premier League goal of the season, heading home after Diego Gomez’s flick.

Liverpool, missing Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah, equalised in the 30th minute through Milos Kerkez, who capitalised on a defensive error by Lewis Dunk.

Welbeck restored Brighton’s lead in the 56th minute, finishing from Jack Hinshelwood’s pass following Yankuba Minteh’s cross. VAR confirmed the goal.

Brighton remained the stronger side despite Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp introducing Rio Ngumoha, Andy Robertson, and Federico Chiesa to chase an equaliser.

The defeat leaves Liverpool fifth, two points behind Aston Villa and one ahead of Chelsea, with top-five positions likely to secure Champions League qualification. Their Premier League title defence has collapsed, but they remain active in the Champions League and will face Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Alisson has announced he will be “out of action for a while” following the game.
