Christopher Maikalangu, AMAC Vice, Receive Certificates of Return from INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) presented certificates of return on Wednesday to the re-elected Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council, Christopher Maikalangu, his Vice, Mohammed Nadabo, and other winners of the February 21 Area Council elections.

The FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner, Malam Aminu Idris, described the event as the “formal conclusion of a successful and transparent electoral process.” Certificates were presented to six council chairmen and their deputies, along with 62 newly elected councilors across the Federal Capital Territory.

“I wish, on behalf of the Commission, to congratulate all of you for your success at the polls. Your election is a testament to the trust imposed on you by the people. Embrace your mandate with a sense of duty, working tirelessly for your constituents,” Idris said, while acknowledging stakeholders like the Nigeria Police Force and political parties for ensuring a free and fair election.

Maikalangu, speaking after receiving his certificate, thanked God and the electorate, calling the day the “final bus stop” of the election cycle. He pledged to allocate 80 per cent of developmental projects to rural areas.

“Local government is about local people. I will continue giving 80 per cent of our projects to the rural areas where most of our activities are focused. I want to thank them for giving me their votes, and I will give them back that dividend of democracy,” he said.

Maikalangu also noted that infrastructure distribution would be tailored to the unique needs of wards such as Kabusa and Garki. He extended an olive branch to political opponents, inviting collaboration to advance AMAC’s development.

“We were not enemies from the beginning. We are political friends. Let them come and join us so that whatever ideas they have, we can move AMAC forward together,” he added.

Vice Chairman-elect Nadabo promised a people-oriented administration with an “open-door policy.” “In some wards, water may be needed; in others, education or infrastructure. We will align our actions with available resources to meet these needs effectively,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the newly elected officials will be sworn in soon.
