Nigerian music stars David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, and Erhiga Agarivbie, known as Erigga, have exchanged words on social media over a debate about family wealth and the struggle for success in the music industry.

The disagreement followed a post by Erigga on X in which he praised musicians who had built their careers without financial support from wealthy families.

Erigga did not mention Davido in the original post. However Davido responded to the comment arguing that musicians who come from wealthy backgrounds can also work hard to establish successful careers.

Davido described Erigga’s message as “useless motivation” and called the rapper an “imbecile” in his response.

Erigga later hit back at Davido, questioning why the singer was offended by a post that did not mention him. He also referred to Davido as the “Ambassador of RICH KIDS.”

The exchange sparked reactions among social media users, with the discussion extending beyond the two artistes to broader issues of privilege, hard work and the different paths through which musicians achieve success.

While some users debated the advantages of coming from a wealthy background others argued that financial privilege does not necessarily eliminate the hard work required to build and sustain a career in the entertainment industry.

The social media exchange has consequently drawn renewed attention to the role of family background and personal effort in determining success within Nigeria’s competitive music industry.
