ABUJA — The naira is trading at different rates against the United States dollar across Nigeria’s official and parallel foreign exchange markets on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
The latest official figures from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) rate at ₦1,329.15 to $1 for the September 15 trading session.
According to the CBN, the NFEM rate represents the volume-weighted average and serves as the official exchange rate for the day.
In the parallel market, however, the dollar is being quoted at about ₦1,380 for buying and ₦1,385 for selling, based on the latest update from Aboki Forex.
Aboki Forex said its parallel-market figures are updated hourly using rates collected from dealers in major cities across the country.
This means a customer seeking to buy $1 in the parallel market could pay around ₦1,385, while someone selling $1 could receive approximately ₦1,380. The actual rate may vary depending on the dealer, location and transaction size.
Official vs parallel-market dollar rate
The difference between the NFEM rate of ₦1,329.15 and the parallel-market selling rate of ₦1,385 is approximately ₦55.85 per dollar.
Against the parallel-market buying rate of ₦1,380, the difference stands at about ₦50.85 per dollar.
The gap between the two markets is closely watched by businesses and individuals who require foreign exchange for imports, international transfers, tuition, travel and other transactions denominated in dollars.
However, the rates are not fixed.
Market prices can change during the day as the supply and demand for dollars fluctuate. Aboki Forex also notes that parallel-market rates can vary from one location or dealer to another and may also depend on the size of the transaction.
For transactions conducted through authorised financial institutions, customers will be subject to the applicable rate determined by the institution and the prevailing NFEM rate.
Parallel-market transactions may have separate buying and selling rates.
