Endrick Shines as Lyon Hand PSG Rare Ligue 1 Defeat to Tighten Title Race
PSG suffer a setback in the title race after a 2-1 home defeat to Lyon led by Endrick.
Lyon boosted their Champions League hopes with a 2-1 away win over Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday, with Brazilian teenager Endrick playing a decisive role in a result that dents PSG’s title charge.
Endrick struck early in the seventh minute, finishing past Matvey Safonov at the near post, before assisting Afonso Moreira for Lyon’s second goal just 11 minutes later.
PSG, who rotated their squad following a Champions League win over Liverpool, failed to take control of the match. Gonçalo Ramos saw a penalty saved after Lucas Hernández was brought down, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia netted a late consolation.
The defeat is PSG’s fifth league loss of the season, leaving them just one point ahead of Lens, though they have a game in hand. A win over Nantes in midweek would restore breathing space at the top.
“You want a more close-fought league and you have it. Lens keep winning and it will be difficult until the end,” said Luis Enrique.
“That’s football and now we just need to prepare for the upcoming games. We are going to be playing every three days now and we need to cope with that.”
PSG remain favourites for a fifth consecutive Ligue 1 title but face added pressure ahead of their Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich.
For Lyon, Paulo Fonseca praised Endrick’s overall contribution after the loan star’s seventh goal since arriving from Real Madrid in January.
“Endrick was decisive but I am especially happy with how hard he worked defensively,” Fonseca said.
In other Ligue 1 fixtures, Rennes beat Strasbourg 3-0, Marseille lost 2-0 at Lorient, while Monaco drew 2-2 with Auxerre despite Folarin Balogun extending his scoring streak.
