Eric Swalwell has resigned from Congress following serious sexual misconduct allegations that emerged over the weekend, marking a dramatic political fall for the Democratic lawmaker.

Swalwell, who had been running for governor of California before suspending his campaign, confirmed his resignation in a statement shared on X.

“I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegation made against me. However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make,” he said.

The resignation follows reports published by the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN detailing allegations from four women. Among them is a former staff member who alleged that Swalwell sexually assaulted her twice while she was intoxicated and unable to consent.

The allegations intensified over the weekend, quickly reshaping his political future and leading to both the suspension of his gubernatorial campaign and his departure from Congress.
