F-4 Phantom Crashes at Athens Airshow as Two Pilots’ Fate Unclear

An F-4 Phantom military jet crashed during an airshow at a base outside Athens on Saturday, Greek news agency ANA reported.

The circumstances that led to the accident were not immediately known, and local media said the fate of the two pilots on board remained unclear.

An ERT journalist at the scene said the aircraft had only just taken off when it suddenly lost altitude and crashed.

The incident unfolded as thousands of people gathered for the annual “Athens Flying Week”. An explosion followed moments after the aircraft struck the ground.

A fire service helicopter was subsequently deployed to the site to put out the fire caused by the crash, ERT reported.

Defence Minister Nikos Dendias cancelled his planned visit to Thessaloniki’s International Fair to travel to the scene and assess the situation.
