IGP Tunji Disu’s Intelligence-Led Policing Is Delivering Results Across Nigeria -By Kelvin Adegbenga
For these reasons, IGP Tunji Disu deserves commendation for his leadership, commitment to operational excellence, and determination to build a more responsive and professional Nigeria Police Force. His efforts continue to reinforce the belief that with the right leadership, strategic vision, and motivated personnel, the Police Force can play an even greater role in securing Nigeria and protecting its citizens.
The primary responsibility of any police institution is the protection of lives and property. In a country as vast and complex as Nigeria, this responsibility requires not only courage and professionalism but also strategic leadership, innovation, and effective coordination. Under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tunji Disu, the Nigeria Police Force has continued to demonstrate its capacity to confront security challenges through intelligence-led policing, strategic deployments, inter-agency cooperation, and the unwavering commitment of police personnel across the country.
Recent operational successes recorded by the Nigeria Police Force provide clear evidence that the Force is moving in the right direction. Across various theatres of operation, police operatives have achieved remarkable breakthroughs against criminal elements threatening the peace and security of the nation.
Among these achievements is the arrest of eight suspected terrorists, twenty-nine murder and culpable homicide suspects, sixty-five armed robbery suspects, and fifty-five suspected kidnappers. Additionally, forty-two suspected cultists were apprehended in different operations nationwide. These successes underscore the determination of the Force to tackle violent crimes and ensure that criminal elements have no safe haven within the country.
Equally commendable is the rescue of eighty-eight victims of kidnapping through coordinated police operations. Behind every rescued victim is a family reunited, a life preserved, and a community reassured that law enforcement remains committed to protecting citizens. Such outcomes reflect the dedication and sacrifice of police officers who put themselves in harm’s way daily to safeguard the public.
The recovery of one hundred and fourteen assorted firearms and eight hundred and forty-three rounds of ammunition further demonstrates the effectiveness of ongoing security operations. These weapons, if left in the hands of criminals, could have been used to perpetrate violence and cause immense harm to innocent Nigerians. The recovery of twenty-eight stolen vehicles also highlights the Force’s commitment to combating organized crime and dismantling criminal networks.
Particularly noteworthy was the arrest of a group of five suspected kidnappers who were intercepted while making their way towards Abuja with the intention of carrying out criminal activities. Acting on actionable intelligence, police operatives successfully disrupted what could have resulted in serious security breaches and danger to residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
This operation demonstrates the importance of proactive policing and the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations in preventing crime before it occurs. It is often said that the most successful security operation is the one that prevents an attack from taking place. The interception of these suspects before they could execute their plans is a testament to the growing intelligence capabilities of the Nigeria Police Force under IGP Disu.
These achievements are not accidental. They are the product of deliberate policies, improved operational coordination, and leadership that prioritizes results. They demonstrate the dedication of police personnel and the effectiveness of coordinated policing strategies under the leadership of IGP Tunji Disu.
Another significant step taken by the IGP is the approval of the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police to their respective geopolitical zones with effect from June 15, 2026. This strategic initiative brings leadership closer to the field, improves response mechanisms, and ensures that emerging security threats receive prompt and coordinated attention.
In a country where security dynamics vary across regions, decentralized supervision by senior police leadership is both timely and necessary. The presence of Deputy Inspectors-General within the zones will strengthen oversight, improve operational efficiency, and facilitate quicker decision-making in response to evolving threats.
Beyond operational successes, another commendable development is IGP Disu’s emphasis on strengthening the relationship between the police and the media. His encouragement to Commissioners of Police and senior officers to maintain professional and constructive engagement with journalists reflects a clear understanding of the importance of public communication in modern policing.
Police engagement with the media should not be limited to announcing arrests or operational successes. It should also involve timely clarification of facts, proactive dissemination of information, and responsible management of misinformation and disinformation directed at the Nigeria Police Force. In an era where false narratives can spread rapidly through digital platforms, effective communication has become an essential component of public safety and institutional credibility.
The IGP’s position on media engagement demonstrates a commitment to transparency and accountability. By fostering stronger relationships with journalists, the Force can improve public confidence while ensuring that citizens receive accurate information regarding security matters.
Furthermore, IGP Disu has continued to emphasize professionalism and discipline within the ranks of the Force. His insistence on maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, enforcing discipline among personnel, and ensuring strict compliance with established operational procedures is critical to building a police institution that commands public trust and respect.
Equally important is his commitment to the welfare, training, and motivation of police personnel. A motivated police officer is more effective, more professional, and better positioned to serve the public. Investments in personnel development not only improve operational performance but also enhance the quality of service delivery to Nigerians.
As the security landscape continues to evolve, the Nigeria Police Force requires visionary leadership capable of adapting to emerging threats while maintaining focus on its core mandate. The achievements recorded so far under IGP Tunji Disu indicate that the Force is increasingly embracing intelligence-driven policing and modern security strategies that yield measurable results.
While challenges remain, the progress made deserves recognition. The arrests, recoveries, rescues, strategic deployments, and renewed emphasis on media engagement collectively demonstrate a police institution striving to improve its effectiveness and strengthen public confidence.
