The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has confirmed that a four-storey building within Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College at 11 Adu Street, Aguda, Ogba, collapsed on Monday, shortly after students and staff had been evacuated safely.
Commissioner Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun said the situation is under control and that no injuries occurred during the incident.
“The incident occurred at approximately noon on Monday when a four-storey building within the school premises collapsed shortly after students and members of staff had safely evacuated the structure,” he said, adding that the building fell less than three minutes after evacuation.
Officials from LASBCA secured the collapsed building and an adjoining residential structure, with two officers on-site to prevent access while technical assessments are carried out.
Yemco College is recognized by the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), and the Ministry is working with relevant agencies to determine the cause of the collapse and enforce safety compliance.
“All measures are being taken to safeguard the wellbeing of learners and staff,” Alli-Balogun said. “Virtual learning arrangements and temporary relocation sites are being considered to ensure students do not lose learning time.”
The Ministry urged parents and the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified reports, assuring that Lagos State Government is handling the matter with urgency and professionalism.
