Boualem Khoukhi’s injury-time goal rescued a 1-1 draw for Qatar against Switzerland on Saturday, securing the Gulf nation’s first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup.

Switzerland had looked set to begin their campaign with victory after Breel Embolo converted a first-half penalty, but their inability to convert numerous chances proved costly.

Qatar, participating in just their second World Cup after hosting the 2022 edition, arrived at the tournament with limited match preparation. The Middle East conflict led to the cancellation of two scheduled friendlies, leaving them with only two matches since December before facing Switzerland.

The Swiss dominated large stretches of the encounter, registering 26 attempts on goal and restricting Qatar for much of the game. However, they failed to put the match beyond reach.

The result was particularly significant for Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui, who finally made his World Cup debut on the touchline. The former Spain manager was controversially dismissed before the 2018 World Cup after accepting a job offer from Real Madrid.

Switzerland were gifted an early warning when Manuel Akanji’s mistake allowed Edmilson Junior a clear sight of goal, but the forward’s effort lacked power and was easily gathered by Gregor Kobel.

Moments later, the Europeans were awarded a penalty after Mahmoud Abunada collided with Remo Freuler in the box. Following a four-minute delay to check for a possible offside, Embolo stepped up and confidently dispatched the spot-kick.

Although Switzerland continued to dominate possession and create openings, they could not add to their lead.

As temperatures soared under the California sun, clear-cut chances became harder to find in the second half. Granit Xhaka came closest with a long-range effort that drifted just over the crossbar, while Embolo sent another opportunity into the side netting.

Qatar capitalised on Switzerland’s wastefulness deep into stoppage time when Khoukhi headed in from close range at the back post in the 94th minute to snatch a dramatic draw.
