Miss Efe Johanna, a university student, believes social media has played a significant role in broadening her understanding of people from different backgrounds.

“Communicating with people has taught me respect, patience, empathy, open-mindedness and tolerance. It helps me understand issues better and avoid assumptions, ” she said.

According to her, social media can be a valuable tool for learning and cultural exchange when used responsibly.

“Social media has become a bridge connecting people from different cultural backgrounds and learning from one another if it is used properly,” she added.

However, despite its ability to unite people, social media can also become a breeding ground for misunderstandings, hostility, and conflict. The anonymity offered by some platforms often encourages users to make offensive comments they might not make in face-to-face interactions.

Miss Buerhe Precious, another university student, observed that online discussions can quickly become aggressive, particularly when sensitive issues are involved.

“During discussions on trending issues, some social media users hide their identities to attack others with offensive language, which can lead to real-life disagreements among individuals or groups,” she said.

Her experience reflects a growing concern about the misuse of social media. Heated arguments, misinformation, cyberbullying, and online harassment have become common features of digital conversations, sometimes creating divisions that extend beyond the internet. Despite these challenges, many users still see social media as a powerful instrument for promoting peace and strengthening human relationships.

Mr. Oluwale Ezekiel, a businessman, explained that social media has become an important platform for encouraging unity and understanding among people across the world.

“Social media has helped many individuals across the country to interact freely with people they would not have met. These interactions help promote understanding, and when people understand one another, they are less likely to engage in conflict among themselves,” he said.

His view highlights the positive role social media can play in fostering dialogue and building connections across communities. From raising awareness about social issues to mobilizing support for humanitarian causes, social media continues to provide opportunities for constructive engagement.

As social media becomes increasingly influential in shaping public opinion and human interaction, its impact depends largely on how users choose to engage with it.
