Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has denounced Israeli police for stopping Jerusalem’s Latin Patriarch from leading Palm Sunday Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

According to the Latin Patriarchate, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa was prevented from entering the church to preside over the service.

Meloni said the move was “an offence not only to the faithful but to any community that respects religious freedom”.

Italy’s foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, has since summoned Israel’s ambassador in protest.

Israeli authorities have yet to issue an official response.

The incident comes amid broader restrictions introduced after the US-Israeli offensive against Iran began on February 28, including limits on gatherings in churches, mosques and synagogues.

Palm Sunday, which ushers in Holy Week, commemorates Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, a key moment in Christian tradition.

The Latin Patriarchate also called off its annual Mount of Olives procession due to the restrictions.

Speaking in Rome, Pope Leo XIV acknowledged the impact of the conflict on Christians in the Middle East, noting they are unable to fully observe important religious rites.
