Meta has rolled out paid subscription services for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp in a major shift aimed at expanding revenue sources beyond digital advertising.

The announcement was made Wednesday by Meta’s head of product, Naomi Gleit, in a video posted on Instagram.

Gleit said the company was globally launching Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus and WhatsApp Plus, while also working on future subscription products for creators, businesses and AI-related services.

The move comes as Meta continues investing heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure, with projected spending for the year estimated at between $125 billion and $145 billion, mostly for AI data centres.

Following the announcement, Meta’s stock climbed nearly three percent.

Reports indicated that Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus subscriptions will each cost $3.99 monthly, while WhatsApp Plus will be available for $2.99 per month.

Subscribers to Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus will gain access to enhanced analytics, story viewing statistics, audience growth tools and profile customisation options.

WhatsApp Plus will introduce additional personalisation features, including premium stickers, custom themes and personalised ringtones.

According to Gleit, Meta intends to unify the subscription products in the future under a broader service known as Meta One.

Meta had earlier launched ad-free paid versions of Facebook and Instagram across Europe in 2023 to comply with European Union privacy laws, offering users the option of either a free ad-supported platform or a paid ad-free experience.
