Meta Services Hit by Widespread Outage, Affecting Facebook and Instagram Users
Thousands of users reported problems accessing Facebook, Instagram and Messenger during a global outage affecting Meta-owned platforms.
Facebook and Instagram users worldwide encountered service disruptions on Friday as a widespread outage impacted access to Meta-owned platforms, leaving thousands unable to log in or use core features.
Downdetector, a website that tracks online service interruptions, recorded a significant increase in reports related to Facebook, Instagram and Messenger as the incident unfolded across multiple regions.
Users reported being logged out without warning, experiencing loading failures and encountering error messages while trying to access their accounts or refresh content.
The monitoring platform flagged the issue with alerts stating: “User reports show possible problems with Facebook” and “User reports show possible problems with Instagram.”
Reuters reported that the outage generated more than 62,000 complaints from Facebook users and over 8,000 from Instagram users during its peak.
Responding to the incident, Meta Communications Director Andy Stone said the company was aware of the problem and was working to restore services.
“We’re aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We’re working on it,” Stone wrote on X.
The disruption quickly became a trending topic on competing social media platforms, where users exchanged screenshots and sought confirmation that the problems were widespread rather than account-specific.
The outage marks the latest in a series of service disruptions to affect Meta’s family of apps in recent years. However, the company had yet to provide details on the cause of Friday’s incident as engineers continued efforts to restore full functionality.
