Newcastle Rescue 2-2 Draw After Bournemouth Take Two-Goal Lead

Newcastle United came from two goals behind to hold Bournemouth to a 2-2 draw on Saturday, maintaining their unbeaten record despite another challenging afternoon for Matthias Jaissle’s newly reshaped side.

Bournemouth made the stronger start at St James’ Park and moved 2-0 ahead by the 35th minute through Marcus Tavernier and an own goal from Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw.

Tavernier reacted quickest after Alex Scott’s shot took a heavy deflection, poking the ball beyond Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek to put the visitors ahead.

Bournemouth then increased their advantage after Justin Kluivert’s effort from distance struck the post and rebounded off Hornicek. Scott’s cross subsequently hit Thiaw and looped into the Newcastle goal.

However, the hosts responded less than two minutes later when Harvey Barnes produced a brilliant individual effort to reduce the deficit.

Barnes drove forward on the left, cut inside and curled a superb shot beyond Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.

Newcastle found it difficult to build sustained pressure after the break, but Jaissle turned to his bench in search of a way back into the game.

New signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo entered the contest in the 63rd minute to warm applause, with the German coach making further substitutions as Newcastle pushed for an equaliser.

Their persistence finally paid off in the 88th minute when substitute Jacob Ramsey capitalised on Bournemouth’s failure to clear and calmly steered the ball home to make it 2-2.

The draw keeps Newcastle unbeaten in all competitions this season. They began their Premier League campaign with a 2-2 draw against Liverpool and followed that result with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham.

The result comes during a period of major transition at Newcastle. Jaissle was appointed last month after Eddie Howe ended his long spell in charge. Howe had previously managed Bournemouth.

The Magpies have also seen major changes to their squad, with Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon departing. The club brought in eight new players during what it described as a “transformational” summer transfer window.

Bournemouth are likewise adjusting to a new manager, with Marco Rose replacing Andoni Iraola after his move to Liverpool.

Despite surrendering a two-goal lead, Bournemouth once again threatened to repeat their tendency to concede late goals. Newcastle took advantage in the closing minutes as Ramsey’s composed finish ensured the points were shared.
