The Rivers State Police Command has disbanded its existing tactical teams and introduced a new operational structure aimed at improving response to violent crimes and boosting professionalism.

ASP Blessing Agabe, spokesperson of the command, announced the development in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, saying it followed directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

She said the former tactical teams have been consolidated into a new unit called the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).

“The VCRU is mandated to respond swiftly and decisively to incidents of violent crime, while adhering to established rules of engagement and respect for fundamental human rights,” she stated.

Agabe noted that the reform is designed to improve coordination among units and rebuild public confidence in policing operations.

The Rivers Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, warned officers against extortion and abuse of office, stressing that disciplinary action would follow any breach.

“Any violation of the Nigeria Police Force Code of Conduct will attract disciplinary action,” he said.

He further urged residents to support police operations by sharing credible information on criminal activities and misconduct.

Adepoju reaffirmed the command’s commitment to “effective, accountable, and people-centred policing” in the state.
