Six Years Since the Passing of Malamin Daji -By Hon. Abdullahi Mahmud Gaya

Indeed, all living things on earth are mortal; death is inevitable, and none can escape it. People of all faiths understand that life is temporary, that neither man nor any other living organism can live forever.

Innalillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. On , 2nd April 2020, my father, Alhaji Mahmud Ismaila Abdullahi Maje Karofi, left this world and returned to his Creator after a long, protracted illness

Regardless of circumstances, the transition to the world beyond is certain for all. Some, however, leave this world having accomplished much, having made significant contributions to society. This was certainly true of my dear father and mentor, Alhaji Mahmud Ismaila. He was not only a devoted father but a true Muslim in both name and conduct.

Throughout his life, he remained steadfast in faith, never allowing himself to be swayed by empty sentiment, and he treated all people with humility and respect. Though born into royalty, he never displayed arrogance; instead, he related to everyone with dignity and kindness.

To live to the age of 103 is indeed a blessing. My father lived a virtuous life and championed the cause of Islam. He was widely known as a man of honor, a just leader, and a caring father. He will be eternally remembered for his steadfastness, integrity, and absolute faith in Allah.

I did not wish to be the one to speak these words, but I feel a duty to honor him—not just for myself, but for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

In a condolence letter to me, then President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the late Muhammadu Buhari, expressed his belief that the late Mahmud’s contributions during the notable years of forest conservation and development in the country would always be remembered.

Ba’ba was more than a father; he was our mentor and friend, instilling in us the importance of treating everyone with respect, regardless of social standing. Though a Kano prince of the Abdullahi Maje Karofi lineage, he led a simple life as a devoted conservationist. His work earned him the popular title Malamin Daji, yet he remained humble and kindhearted. Choosing service over status, he dedicated his life to the welfare of others rather than pursuing power or privilege.

Our father was a hero to us. We are grateful for every memory shared and every lesson learned. It is my hope to live a life worthy of his example. On the passing of a loved one, we inherit a responsibility: to continue their legacy in our own way.

Since my election to the House of Representatives, my weekly visits to him in Gaya Town reminded me of his enduring guidance: to remember that I will account for my deeds before Allah, remind me to represent my people with integrity, and to serve them to the best of my ability. Malam Mahmud instilled in us the values of hard work, self-discipline, and moral uprightness. Baba was a disciplinarian whose principles and integrity were unwavering.

He devoted his life and resources to caring for his family and helping others, particularly orphans, and promoting Islam. Always encouraged the pursuit of good and the avoidance of evil. We, his children, could see his concern whenever someone acted selfishly or disrespectfully. He always reminded us to fear Allah and to conduct ourselves honorably in all matters.

In losing him, we lost a father, mentor, and friend. He provided for us, guided our education, and nurtured strong bonds of love and respect within the family. He balanced care and discipline, sometimes treating us as friends, sometimes with the conservatism of a guiding parent.

We are deeply indebted to him for his fatherly care, moral guidance, sacrifices, and the invaluable life lessons he imparted. Words cannot adequately express our gratitude, but we pray that Allah rewards him abundantly.

Alhaji Mahmud Ismaila lived an exemplary life. His legacy of virtue, service, and faith remains an enduring inspiration. As we reflect on his life, we pray that Allah forgives his shortcomings, grants him mercy, shelters his resting place, blesses him for his good deeds, and admits him into Paradise. May his grave be spacious and radiant, and may he dwell in eternal peace. Ameen.
