SPAR Mall Fire: Tinubu Approves ₦515m Intervention for Victims, Women’s Groups
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu announces a ₦515 million intervention for victims of the Calabar SPAR Mall fire, including ₦450 million for 18 businesses.
The Federal Government has approved a ₦515 million intervention package following the devastating fire at Calabar’s SPAR Mall, with 18 affected business owners set to receive ₦25 million each.
The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, announced the relief package on Friday during her visit to Calabar, saying President Bola Tinubu approved the funds to cushion the effect of the fire on affected businesses and their owners.
Under the intervention, 18 business owners will collectively receive ₦450 million, while an additional ₦50 million has been allocated to support women’s groups in Cross River State.
The ₦50 million was presented to the Wife of the Governor of Cross River State, Bishop Eyoanwan Otu. A further ₦15 million was given to women who received the First Lady during her visit to the state.
Explaining the rationale behind the intervention, Senator Tinubu said: “Mr President commiserates with the government and people of Cross River over this unfortunate incident that destroyed many businesses and livelihoods.
“This intervention is to provide immediate support and help victims recover from their losses.”
The relief followed the August 22 fire outbreak at the shopping mall, which destroyed properties worth billions of naira and left several businesses facing substantial financial losses.
Senator Tinubu said the Federal Government’s intervention was intended to give affected entrepreneurs immediate assistance while supporting their recovery and efforts to rebuild their livelihoods.
Governor Bassey Otu, who received the First Lady, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and Senator Tinubu for the assistance.
He described the intervention as timely, saying it would bring much-needed succour to the victims of the fire disaster.
According to the governor, the relief package would provide meaningful support to affected business owners as they work to rebuild their businesses and restore their livelihoods.
