Tinubu Defends APC’s Founding Vision, Says Party Built to Tackle Poverty, Insecurity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was created as a reform-driven platform to combat poverty, enhance security, and rebuild Nigeria’s institutions.

Addressing party members at the 4th Elective National Convention in Eagle Square, Abuja, Tinubu described the APC as more than a political machine, portraying it instead as a movement committed to inclusive governance and national development.

He noted that the party was envisioned as “a home for anybody who wants to build a Nigeria where governance works, institutions function, opportunities abound, security reigns, poverty declines, and every Nigerian… can live with dignity and hope.”

Reflecting on the party’s formation 13 years ago, the President said it emerged from a shared resolve among political leaders to overcome divisions and confront Nigeria’s economic difficulties.

Tinubu maintained that the APC continues to be guided by the belief that democracy must produce meaningful outcomes for citizens, anchored on principles of vision, discipline, justice, and development.

He described the convention as a defining juncture, urging members to recommit to the party’s ideals under the theme, “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Responding to criticisms, Tinubu rejected claims that the APC is pursuing a one-party state, emphasizing that a strong opposition is vital for democratic health.

“Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition,” he said, noting that constructive criticism plays a role in shaping better governance.

The President also criticized ongoing attacks on the Electoral Act 2026, warning that such narratives undermine public confidence.

While acknowledging current economic hardship, Tinubu defended his administration’s reform agenda as necessary for long-term gains.

“We knew the road to reform would be tough. Rebuilding Nigeria requires courage, patience, and difficult decisions,” he said.

Despite global economic headwinds, including tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, Tinubu said his government has made measurable progress, particularly in infrastructure development, with a focus on road construction and long-term economic stability.
