Tragedy as LASU Student Dies Days After Armed Robbery Attack in Iba

A Lagos State University (LASU) student has died after battling injuries sustained during a violent robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos, throwing the university community into mourning.

The deceased, Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, was a student of the Department of History and International Studies in the Faculty of Arts. He was reportedly attacked alongside friends by suspected armed robbers outside the university campus on the night of May 29, 2026.

Confirming the development, LASU management described the incident as heartbreaking and expressed sympathy to the family and loved ones of the deceased.

“The university community received with profound sadness the news of the passing of Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, a student of the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent robbery attack in the Iba area on Friday, May 29, 2026,” the university stated.

The institution said Boluwatife was rushed for urgent medical attention after the attack, while emergency support measures were immediately activated.

LASU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, also conveyed her condolences to those affected by the loss.

“The Vice-Chancellor expresses her heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased student and assures them that the university stands with them in this difficult time,” the statement said.

According to the university, the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, coordinated efforts to support the student, keeping management informed of his condition and maintaining close contact with medical personnel.

However, despite intensive medical intervention, Boluwatife passed away on June 2, 2026.

LASU said it has since engaged with the student’s family, officials of LASUTH and security agencies as investigations continue.

“We are working closely with relevant security agencies in the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack and remain confident that the perpetrators will be identified and brought to justice,” the institution stated.

The university reaffirmed its commitment to securing justice for the deceased and urged members of the university community to support his family.

The tragic incident has further intensified concerns over security around higher institutions in Lagos, with renewed calls for stronger protection for students and residents in surrounding communities.
