Trump doubles down on AI push, plans new ‘AI Force’ and AI czar

US President Donald Trump has doubled down on his support for artificial intelligence, saying the United States will not hinder the industry’s growth and announcing plans for a new government “AI Force.”

Trump made the announcement Saturday as concerns continue to grow in Washington and the technology industry over the pace of AI development and its potential risks.

In a Truth Social post, Trump accused liberals of seeking the “decimation, or destruction, of AI” and said he would not allow that to happen.

“I, as President of the United States, will not stand by and let this happen,” Trump wrote.

“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry. Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows!”

Trump said the new “AI Force” would be responsible for “looking for BAD” actors and suggested that existing criminal and civil laws could be used to deal with wrongdoing involving the technology. He also said he would soon announce an AI coordinator, whom he referred to as a “Czar.”

The president did not provide details about the proposed force, including its structure, budget or precise role. He compared the initiative to the Space Force, although the White House has not clarified whether the new body would be military or civilian.

Trump’s position comes amid a growing debate over whether AI development is moving too quickly. Some technology leaders and researchers have warned about potential safety risks, while political leaders have discussed additional rules and safeguards.

Trump has rejected such warnings, describing fears about the technology as a “hoax.” He has also stressed the importance of maintaining US leadership over China in artificial intelligence.

Jacob Coxon, a former researcher at Anthropic, recently intensified the debate after warning about the potential dangers of increasingly advanced AI systems. His comments followed broader warnings from figures in the technology industry about the pace of development.

Trump has also expressed confidence in the United States’ ability to lead the AI race, saying the country cannot afford to lose its technological advantage to China. He said the main safeguard needed was a “STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT,” adding that the United States has that “in spades!”

Meanwhile, Trump used another post on Saturday to ask whether “artificial intelligence” is still the best description for the technology.

He offered three alternatives — “superior intelligence,” “extreme intelligence” and “supreme intelligence” — and asked the public to vote on which name should be used for what he called the technology’s “ever growing ‘Revolution.’”

The proposed AI Force and appointment of an AI czar come as the US government faces competing demands to encourage technological innovation while addressing concerns over AI safety, regulation and its broader impact.
