UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer steps down amid political turmoil
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed his resignation outside Downing Street after months of political pressure and criticism.
Keir Starmer has announced he is resigning as UK Prime Minister after less than two years in office, citing political responsibility and a need for leadership transition.
Speaking outside Downing Street on Monday, Starmer confirmed his departure in an emotional address.
“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” he said.
He explained that Labour will begin selecting a new leader in July, while he will remain Prime Minister until the process is completed and a successor is appointed before Parliament returns in September.
“I will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete, and I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power,” Starmer said.
The announcement follows months of mounting political pressure, including public dissatisfaction, internal party challenges, and several high-profile resignations.
Starmer had previously resisted calls to step down, insisting he would continue leading the government despite criticism.
His time in office saw Labour return to power in 2024 after 14 years in opposition, but his leadership later faced criticism over policy U-turns, spending decisions, and internal disputes.
He also faced controversy over key appointments, including that of Peter Mandelson, which triggered backlash and intensified leadership tensions earlier in the year.
The rise of Reform UK added further pressure after strong performances in local elections, weakening Labour’s political standing.
Starmer said he would support his successor fully.
“I will also give my successor my full and unequivocal support, knowing that they will inherit a Britain that is far stronger and fairer than the one I inherited two years ago,” he said.
