US Jet Crashes in Iran; Special Forces Rescue One Crew Member
US media report a downed F-15E jet in Iran. One crew member has been rescued while efforts continue to locate the second.
A US military aircraft has been brought down over Iran, with one crew member rescued and another still missing, according to multiple US media reports on Friday. Iranian outlets had earlier aired footage showing what appeared to be debris from the aircraft.
Sources cited by Axios and CBS News said US special forces recovered one of the two personnel onboard, while search efforts continue for the second.
Coverage from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal identified the downed aircraft as an F-15E fighter jet, which carries both a pilot and a rear-seat weapons-systems officer.
CNN reported that analysis of the wreckage images—shared by Iranian media—supports the conclusion that the aircraft was an F-15, not an F-35 stealth jet as some Iranian reports suggested.
Reports also indicated that Donald Trump had been informed of the situation. There has been no immediate official response from the White House or the Pentagon.
US media described an ongoing search-and-rescue mission led by specialized forces, following what may be the first known US jet loss within Iranian territory since Trump ordered the war.
Photos and videos circulating online and via Iranian outlets, referenced by US media, showed US helicopters and other aircraft operating at low altitude around the presumed crash location.
