‘We are not spoilt’: Halima Dangote speaks on growing up as billionaire Dangote’s daughter

A resurfaced interview featuring billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote’s three daughters has generated fresh reactions online, with Halima Dangote opening up about how she and her sisters navigated life in one of Nigeria’s wealthiest families.

The video resurfaced on X on Saturday and was taken from Bloomberg’s Next Africa special, which featured Halima alongside her sisters, Mariya and Fatima Dangote.

The interview was recorded at the Dangote family’s Lagos residence and published by Bloomberg in August 2026.

The three sisters hold senior roles within the Dangote Group, amid the conglomerate’s continuing efforts to build its succession structure.

Reflecting on their upbringing, Halima rejected the perception that being the daughters of one of Africa’s richest men meant they grew up spoilt.

“We are not spoilt,” she said.

Halima said she and her sisters have generally kept a low profile, particularly when dealing with people from families and social circles similar to theirs.

“Any time we meet with our co-peers — like the kids of our dad’s friends, or people that we’re supposed to — we don’t… I mean, everyone has his own job. We are more… we’re quiet in the sense that we don’t say who we are.

“It’s, I don’t know if it’s fortunate or unfortunate, now people recognise us. But it was easier when we were not recognised; you know, our results speak for themselves.”

She noted that unlike some people who are comfortable displaying their wealth and personal lives online, the three sisters have chosen to keep such matters private.

“I mean, some people are really comfortable with social media, with being known, with being expressive. I don’t think we are — all three of us are not expressive of what we have or what we own or what we’re doing,” she said.

For Halima, professional results are more important than public displays of wealth or status. She pointed to the sisters’ responsibilities and the performance of the businesses under their watch.

“I think, like Fatima and Mariya said, the results are just the ones speaking for themselves: the sale of this business, the profit of this, the EBITDA, our growth, growing to $100 billion. We are all in those key positions and, I mean, numbers don’t lie,” she added.

Her comments come against the backdrop of previous remarks by Aliko Dangote about succession in his business empire.

Dangote has said that having a son was not a priority for him, stressing that he believes his three daughters are capable of taking over the family business.

“Sometimes when God doesn’t give you something, don’t push. I don’t think a son would have done something better than these three daughters that I have. That one, I think, you know, it’s not my priority,” he said.
