When Faith Divides Love: Goodbye Heals the Pain -By Adamu Ahmad Umar
Not every love story ends in marriage. Sometime, two people can deeply love each other, yet still decide to say goodbye. What matters is how they handle the situation. Love should not make us hate someone because of their religion, and religion should not make us hate someone we once loved. Sometime, saying goodbye does not mean the love was fake. It can mean both people have accepted reality and chosen peace. Sometimes, saying goodbye to someone you love is the first step toward healing and can help prevent further religious conflict.
Sometimes, two people can deeply love each other, but there may be something that can stop them from being together. Love can bring two people close, but faith, family and culture can sometimes stand between them. This is what happened in Love and Faith, a movie produced by Kannywood’s actress Amal Umar, which brings together Kannywood and Nollywood in a story about love between people from different religious backgrounds. The movie shows how love can bring people together, but faith can also create a boundary that love may not be able to cross.
Uche was transferred from Lagos to one of the northern states in Nigeria. There, he met Hafsat, a young Hausa Muslim lady who was working in the same organization as him. They started as friends, but with time, their friendship became love. Everyone around them could see what was happening between them because they were always communicating and sending lovely messages to each other, whether they were at work or outside work.
Their love continued to grow, and they started dreaming of being together. But when Hafsat’s parents understood what was going on between them, they did not accept it because Uche and Hafsat were practising different religions. Later, a Muslim scholar explained to Uche the Islamic position that a Muslim woman cannot marry a non-Muslim man. After hearing this, Uche began to understand the situation and decided to respect Hafsat’s religion and her family’s position.
This is where the story gives us something important to think about. People from different religions can become friends, care for each other and even fall in love. But before going too far in a relationship, they need to understand each other’s religion and what it allows or does not allow. Love alone cannot solve every problem. Sometimes, there are things that people need to discuss before their feelings become too deep.
Another thing people need to understand is that loving someone does not mean forcing that person to leave their religion. If we truly care about someone, we should respect what they believe in, even when we do not believe the same thing. In Nigeria, where Muslims, Christians and people from different cultures live together, learning to respect each other’s beliefs is very important. We can have different religions and still live peacefully with one another.
Marriage is also not only about two people. Family, religion and culture can play a significant role in it. A person may fall in love with someone, but when marriage comes, there are many questions that need to be answered. What will the family say? What does their religion say? How will they raise their children? These are things that people in relationships with different religious backgrounds need to think about before the relationship becomes too serious.
In the end, Uche decided to return to Lagos so that he could create distance between himself and Hafsat. It was not because he stopped loving her. It was because Uche understood that Hafsat’s religion did not allow her to marry him. They both decided to say goodbye and respect each other’s faith. It was painful, but sometimes, saying goodbye can be better than staying together.
