Alleged IPOB Support: Federal High Court Remands Ex-DSS Officer in Kuje Prison

A retired operative of the Department of State Services (DSS), Nwaogu Ihechimere Ezeakolam, has been remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre after being arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related charges linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The DSS brought a four-count charge against the retired officer, accusing him of joining IPOB, promoting the organisation through social media, and engaging in activities allegedly designed to attract public support for the banned group.

The prosecution told Justice Muhammed Umar that the alleged acts violated Sections 13, 25 and 26 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

When the charges were read in court, Ezeakolam pleaded not guilty to all four counts.

The prosecution thereafter sought a trial date and requested that the defendant be kept in custody pending trial.

Justice Umar granted the application, fixed October 29 for the commencement of trial and ordered that the defendant be remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre.

According to the charge, Ezeakolam allegedly rendered support to IPOB by “providing moral assistance and disseminating terrorist information” through the internet and social media platforms between 2025 and 2026 in Abuja and Abia State.

He was also accused of joining the proscribed organisation, posting messages intended to encourage members of the public to support IPOB, and publishing content allegedly aimed at advancing the group’s activities.

The prosecution said the alleged offences are punishable under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, as well as the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, as amended.
