At the end of it all, we are Nigerians. Politics, religion, or tribe cannot stop us from coming together. President Tinubu’s visit to the Vatican is a timely reminder that we can to become united if we choose to respect, speak, and walk as one. United Nigeria means a stronger and better Nigeria.
President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to the Vatican for the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV was a resounding message of peace and harmony. Despite being a Muslim, he stood in solidarity with Christian leaders in a place most important to Catholics. This is a sign that religion does not necessarily have to tear us apart. Instead, it can be employed as a tool to unite us, especially in a culturally diverse country like Nigeria.
One of the strongest moments during the visit was witnessing President Tinubu standing alongside Peter Obi and Kayode Fayemi. They are recognized political figures who happen to be Catholics. Even though they have various beliefs and political views, they were respectful and loving towards one another. This is a lesson to all of us that even when we do not agree, we can live and work together for the benefit of our nation.
President Tinubu spoke about using our differences to make Nigeria a better nation. According to him, instead of fighting because we are different, we should use such differences to grow. His words, “If we use our diversity not for adversity but for prosperity,” come to mind when it comes to the significance of oneness as the foundation of peace and achievement in a nation.
While addressing Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Tinubu talked about peace and coexisting with others from around the world. He asserted that Nigeria wants to be a country that recognizes and respects all religions. This message helps to eliminate fear and hatred as well as encourage people of different religions to coexist in harmony.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria welcomed President Tinubu with open arms. They were happy to have a leader offering an olive branch to others, irrespective of religion. It is proof that if leaders are kind and open-minded, others will reciprocate in the same way. It’s a leap in faith towards trust establishment among various parties in the country.
This visit is a reminder to all political leaders that Nigeria comes first. Muslim or Christian, belonging to any tribe, what matters is doing things for the peace and progress of Nigeria. When the nation comes first, the people will follow their leaders.
The message to take home from this visit are simple but forceful: speak to each other, treat each other with respect, and always put Nigeria first above all else. If we all stand by these principles, then unity will grow stronger in all parts of the country. We do not need to agree on all things, but we must agree to work together.
