Obi Rejects Bwala’s Allegation of Campaign Overture in 2023
Former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi says he never asked Daniel Bwala to join his 2023 campaign, dismissing the claim as baseless in a statement released in Abuja.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has dismissed claims by presidential aide Daniel Bwala that he attempted to recruit him into his 2023 election campaign.
The allegation, made by Bwala during an interview with media personality Daddy Freeze, suggested that Obi reached out to him through former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
But in a statement released in Abuja on Friday through his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, Obi described the claim as unfounded and insisted he had no relationship with Bwala.
The statement said the former Anambra State governor generally avoids responding to such allegations but chose to speak out to prevent the public from being misled.
“Normally, we would not dignify Bwala’s baseless accusations with a reply, given his well-documented history of dishonesty. However, we feel it is necessary to address this matter for the benefit of the public, who may be misled,” the statement read.
Obi’s media team also criticised what it called Bwala’s style of politics, saying it differed sharply from Obi’s principles.
“Obi has made it clear that he excludes individuals like Bwala from his political activities and any form of transactional politics that sustain people like him in political circles. He would rather allocate resources to provide desks for children in Bwala’s village than pay him to concoct falsehoods for public consumption,” the statement said.
It ended with a call for a change in attitude among political actors.
“For the umpteenth time, we call on Bwala and others like him to count Obi out of their greed, repent, and join us in the quest for a new Nigeria,” the statement added.
Bwala had alleged that the invitation was extended during a meeting at the Hilton Hotel in London attended by Obasanjo, Obi’s running mate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed and other stakeholders. He said he declined the offer despite his respect for the former president.
