Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, has died in the custody of his abductors, the Katsina State Government has confirmed.

Abubakar was kidnapped alongside his wife about two weeks ago while travelling through the Matazu area of Katsina State to attend a wedding.

Confirming the development on Saturday, the state government said the retired general died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while being held captive.

Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, said all efforts by the government and security agencies to secure his safe release proved unsuccessful.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various Security Agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy.”

According to the commissioner, the former senior military officer died of natural causes.

“The deceased Retired General died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension.

“His abduction and subsequent death are not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but a monumental loss to the entire country.”

The government also conveyed Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s condolences, describing the death as a “dark moment” and stressing the need for intensified efforts to tackle insecurity.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this difficult time. May the soul of the departed Retired Major General Rabe Abdulakdir rest in eternal peace.”

Before his death, Abubakar and his wife appeared in a video released by their captors. In the footage, the kidnappers demanded the release of three detained associates—Sani, Aminu and Nasiru—and sought the return of livestock allegedly seized from them.

While his wife appealed to authorities and community leaders to meet the demands, the retired general urged dialogue and peace, saying the abductors had indicated a desire for peaceful coexistence.
