Serena’s Wimbledon Comeback Ends in Defeat to Maya Joint

Serena Williams’ return to Wimbledon singles action after four years ended with a hard-fought defeat to Australia’s Maya Joint on Tuesday.

The seven-time Wimbledon champion lost 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3 in a dramatic Centre Court clash that lasted two hours and 22 minutes.

At 44, Williams became the second-oldest woman to compete in Wimbledon singles in the Open era behind Martina Navratilova.

The American legend showed remarkable determination by saving two match points and forcing a deciding set after winning a tense second-set tie-break.

However, Joint recovered after falling behind in the final set and secured victory to end Serena’s fairytale comeback bid.

Williams, who returned from retirement earlier this month, said she wanted to play again in front of her children.

Before Wimbledon, she featured in doubles tournaments at Queen’s Club and Berlin before accepting a singles wild card.

Her last Grand Slam appearance had been at the 2022 US Open, where she suggested she was stepping away from tennis after losing to Ajla Tomljanovic.

Tuesday marked her first Wimbledon singles match since her first-round defeat to Harmony Tan in 2022.

Serena’s family, including husband Alexis Ohanian, daughters Olympia and Adira, and sister Venus Williams, watched from the stands as Centre Court erupted in support for the tennis icon.

Joint, ranked world number 87, remained calm throughout the match despite facing one of the sport’s greatest players.

The 20-year-old Australian broke Williams late in the opening set and eventually closed out the match after regaining momentum in the decider.

Although Serena’s singles run is over, she is still set to compete in the doubles event alongside Venus Williams.
