Hamas has announced its acceptance of a ceasefire roadmap proposed by US President Donald Trump that includes the group’s disarmament and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, although Israel has not officially endorsed the agreement.

The announcement came on Friday, with Hamas saying it had agreed to surrender its weapons to the National Committee for Administration of Gaza (NCAG), which is expected to oversee governance during the transition.

However, an Israeli political source told AFP that the proposal falls short of Israel’s long-standing demand for the complete demilitarisation of the Gaza Strip.

The source also said that discussions on Gaza were absent from this week’s meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump.

Trump had earlier revealed that Hamas agreed to “complete disarmament,” describing it as an essential step toward forming a new Palestinian administration in Gaza.

According to Hamas officials, the group’s weapons will be placed under the supervision of the NCAG, established through Trump’s Board of Peace initiative.

Hamas negotiator Ghazi Hamad said the movement agreed to the proposal to ease the suffering of Palestinians.

“We are making concessions for the sake of our people in the Gaza Strip, to save them from killing and displacement.”

He insisted that the disarmament process would remain under Palestinian control.

“Israel will not intervene in the issue of disarmament. The National Committee is the body that will undertake this task.”

The Board of Peace later confirmed that Hamas had endorsed “a detailed Roadmap for implementing the next phases of the Gaza ceasefire,” saying attention would now shift to implementation.

Trump said the agreement envisages the withdrawal of Israeli forces after Hamas is disarmed, with security responsibilities transferred to an International Stabilization Force and a newly established Palestinian police force.

Nickolay Mladenov, the Board of Peace’s High Representative for Gaza, stressed that successful implementation would be critical.

“What happens next matters even more. Implementation and verification have to be real.”

He added:

“Withdrawal must move in lockstep with decommissioning.”

Diplomatic efforts are expected to continue in Cairo, where Egypt, the United States, Qatar and Turkey are preparing for another round of talks on the next phase of the ceasefire.

Despite the truce that has been in effect since October, fighting has not completely ceased, with Palestinian health officials reporting that Israeli strikes killed four people, including two children, on Thursday.
