Khamenei Warns Iran Won’t Expect Change in US Hostility Despite Trump’s Election Setback
Mojtaba Khamenei warns that renewed US and Israeli attacks on Iran could widen the war as diplomatic efforts continue to prevent fresh fighting.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has dismissed expectations that the outcome of the United States midterm elections could bring a change in Washington’s policy towards Tehran, declaring that those holding such hopes are “seriously mistaken”.
In a written statement released on Wednesday through his official website, Khamenei argued that political and party changes in the US would not end what he described as hostility towards the Iranian nation.
“Those who still harbour even the slightest hope that the behaviour of the hegemonic system might change through partisan or factional shifts, or who imagine that making concessions to the United States can dissuade it from hostility towards the Iranian nation, are seriously mistaken,” he stated.
His comments followed Tuesday’s US midterm elections, in which Democrats took control of Congress in a major setback for President Donald Trump.
The election results reflected widespread concerns among American voters over living costs, tariffs and the ongoing US war against Iran, which has driven up fuel prices.
Khamenei’s warning came amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent a return to military confrontation in the conflict that erupted on February 28.
The situation remains tense, with US and Israeli leaders recently threatening to launch further attacks against Iran.
Responding to the threats, the Iranian supreme leader warned that any renewed aggression would lead to a much broader war.
“Should such aggressions be repeated, the war’s scope will become much wider,” he said.
Meanwhile, Iran’s chief negotiator in talks with the United States, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, interpreted the election results as a clear message from American voters against the war.
Writing on X, Ghalibaf said: “Conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message.”
He also warned Washington against disregarding the wishes of its citizens in favour of external interests.
“If the US govt betrays their public will to serve international paymasters and blackmailers, it will learn our NO comes with a Nightmare,” he wrote.
Iran’s judiciary chief, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, equally welcomed the outcome of the midterm elections, declaring that Trump had suffered military and political defeats.
“Trump has been defeated both militarily and politically,” Ejei said.
“We will certainly inflict further defeats on him,” he added.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 57, assumed the position of Iran’s supreme leader after US-Israeli military strikes at the beginning of the conflict killed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Since succeeding his father in March, the new leader has yet to make a public appearance and has communicated through written statements.
