2027 Election: Utomi Says APC Cannot Find Evidence to Prosecute Peter Obi
Prof. Pat Utomi says the APC-led government cannot find credible evidence against Peter Obi, arguing that the former presidential candidate has been unfairly targeted ahead of the 2027 election.
Prof. Pat Utomi has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government of being unable to find credible evidence against Peter Obi, arguing that the former Anambra State governor would have faced prosecution if there were allegations of corruption that could be substantiated.
Utomi expressed this position in a Wednesday post on X, suggesting that Obi’s position as an opposition figure would have made him an easy target for the government if any incriminating information existed.
According to the political economist, the government’s inability to establish wrongdoing against the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has unsettled the political establishment.
“I’ve said this many times, if Peter Obi had any skeletons in his cupboard or was corrupt like many other politicians, this APC-led administration would have seized the opportunity to arrest him, lock him up and keep him behind bars until after the election, especially as an opposition figure,” he stated.
Utomi argued that the absence of damaging information against Obi had made him a source of concern for the country’s political establishment.
He also faulted Nigerians who, in his view, question Obi’s credibility despite his willingness to face an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), while continuing to support politicians he accused of undermining the public interest.
“What strange contradiction has taken hold of some of our consciences? You reject a man who openly challenges the EFCC to prove that he is corrupt (which he is not), yet readily and openly embrace those who have stolen your future,” Utomi wrote.
He questioned why some citizens appeared willing to accept political leadership associated with corruption despite the hardship and challenges facing the country.
The professor called for greater public commitment to integrity, transparency and accountability in the nation’s political leadership.
His remarks come as political debates intensify over Peter Obi’s public service record, allegations of misconduct and the credibility of political leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.
