European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde is set to resign on February 7, 2027, ahead of the scheduled expiration of her term in October of the same year.

The Frankfurt-based central bank announced the development on Thursday, confirming that Lagarde had notified the Governing Council and European Council President Antonio Costa of her decision to leave office early.

“European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde today informed the Governing Council and the president of the European Council Antonio Costa that she will step down from her position on 7 February 2027,” the ECB said in an official statement.

Lagarde’s planned departure will occur several months before the conclusion of her current term, which was due to end in October 2027.
