Iran Dismisses Significance of Israeli Election Outcome Amid War Tensions
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei says Israel’s election result will not affect Tehran’s position as threats of renewed attacks continue.
Iran has said that the result of Israel’s upcoming elections will have no bearing on its position, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a tight electoral contest.
Speaking at a weekly press briefing on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Tehran was unconcerned about who would emerge as Israel’s leader.
“It makes no difference to us who, in these elections, takes the helm of a regime that has brought nothing but violence and massacres to our region,” Baqaei stated.
The elections, due to hold on Tuesday, come amid escalating threats from Israel and the United States to launch fresh attacks against Iran. The two countries began their war against Iran in late February.
Netanyahu has recently maintained that the Iranian government must be toppled to eliminate the threat he says it poses.
In an interview with Israel’s Channel 14 on Sunday, Netanyahu said he had “instructed the Mossad and the IDF to overthrow the Iranian regime”.
Responding to the statement, Baqaei described Netanyahu’s comments as “empty threats” and a “sign of desperation”.
