Sowore Accuses Peter Obi of ‘Renting Parties’ Ahead of 2027 Presidential Election
Omoyele Sowore accuses Peter Obi of “renting political parties” and alleges that NDC leaders made ₦9 billion from nomination forms ahead of 2027.
Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has launched a fresh criticism of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and Peter Obi, accusing the former Labour Party presidential candidate of using political parties as temporary platforms during election periods.
Sowore claimed that Obi’s move to the NDC was not aimed at bringing meaningful change to Nigeria but at helping the political establishment contain public anger and escape accountability ahead of the 2027 general election.
The AAC candidate made the allegations in a statement published on X, where he also accused the NDC leadership of making ₦9 billion from nomination forms while allegedly running the party from their homes.
“The same opportunists and packaged political frauds who made ₦9 billion from selling nomination forms while running a political party from their living rooms,” Sowore wrote.
He accused Obi of lacking political principles, arguing that his repeated changes of political platform did not represent a genuine effort to challenge the country’s established political order.
“This is the problem with unprincipled politicians like Peter Obi, who rent political parties every election season, not to liberate Nigerians, but to…. divert public anger and evade the revolutionary consequences of their actions,” Sowore said.
He further alleged that Obi’s supporters and other political actors were attempting to undermine critics and divert public attention from Nigeria’s broader social and political challenges.
Sowore specifically named Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and Abia State Governor Alex Otti among those he accused of helping to promote such distractions.
“But we cannot be fooled,” he said, maintaining that the politicians he criticised were postponing what he called the liberation of Nigerians.
The AAC presidential candidate also questioned the nature of Obi and his allies’ opposition to President Bola Tinubu, alleging that they were more interested in controlling dissent than mounting a sustained challenge to the administration.
“They don’t oppose Tinubu; they simply don’t want anyone to oppose him strongly enough to bring his disastrous reign to an end. Their politics is about managing opposition, not confronting the system,” he said.
Sowore also cited a remark attributed to Datti Baba-Ahmed, Obi’s running mate in the 2023 presidential election, who reportedly referred to Tinubu as their “favourite uncle”.
Obi ran for president in 2023 under the Labour Party before moving to the NDC ahead of the 2027 election.
