Obama Turns Up Heat on Trump, Slams ‘Chaos and Cruelty’ at Campaign Rallies
Barack Obama attacks Trump’s leadership and economic decisions while rallying support for Democratic candidates ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections.
Former US President Barack Obama has intensified his criticism of Donald Trump, accusing the president of making disastrous decisions and presiding over “chaos and cruelty” as he rallied support for Democratic candidates ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
Obama campaigned in Ohio and Michigan on Saturday, seeking to mobilise Democratic voters as the party attempts to wrest control of the US House of Representatives, the Senate or both from Trump’s Republicans.
The former president, who continues to command considerable support among Democrats, focused his attacks on the administration’s handling of the economy, rising living costs and what he described as poor leadership.
In Ohio, where he campaigned for former Democratic senator Sherrod Brown, Obama accused Trump of making a series of damaging decisions.
“The current president chose to make a series of bad decisions,” he said.
“Most importantly, he decided to start an unnecessary war that nobody asked for.”
Speaking in Cleveland, Obama urged voters to use the midterm elections to register their dissatisfaction with the administration.
“After two years of chaos and cruelty and corruption and incompetence, the likes of which we have not seen in the modern era, you get a chance to say, ‘Enough is enough,’” he declared.
“We are voting for change right here in Ohio.”
Obama targets Trump over economy, foreign policy
Obama’s campaign appearances came amid growing voter concerns over the cost of living and soaring fuel prices.
He blamed the Trump administration for the economic pressures facing Americans and urged voters to support Democratic candidates who are seeking to challenge Republican control of Congress.
In Michigan, Obama backed Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic candidate from the party’s left wing who is locked in a close Senate race against Republican Mike Rogers.
Obama also highlighted the prospect of El-Sayed joining Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin in the Senate, describing the potential partnership as a source of pride for Michigan.
“Imagine the power duo of Abdul and Elissa,” he said.
“You got a Muslim man, you got a Jewish woman fighting for you in the United States Senate. That’s something, Michigan, you can be proud of.”
With early voting already open in Ohio and Michigan, Obama urged supporters not to delay casting their ballots.
“Don’t procrastinate, don’t equivocate,” he said.
Ohio races expected to be tight
In Ohio, Brown is attempting to return to the Senate by defeating incumbent Republican Senator Jon Husted.
The state’s gubernatorial contest will pit Democratic candidate Amy Acton against Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, who ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.
Polling referenced in the report gives Democrats a narrow advantage in both contests, though the outcomes remain uncertain.
The races are among those expected to shape the balance of power in Washington after the midterm elections.
Obama ridicules Trump’s White House makeover
Obama also mocked Trump’s renovation projects in the US capital, including the work on the National Mall’s Reflecting Pool, the planned construction of a large White House ballroom and the gold-coloured decorations introduced in the Oval Office during Trump’s second term.
In a sharp jab at the president’s taste in interior design, Obama said: “He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.”
The remark added a personal dimension to Obama’s broader criticism of Trump’s leadership.
National polling suggests Democrats have a stronger chance of regaining control of the House of Representatives, while the Senate contest is expected to be more difficult.
Obama’s campaign appearances reflect the Democratic Party’s effort to mobilise its base and turn dissatisfaction with the administration into electoral gains on November 3.
