The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has expressed distress over media reports alleging that images of child abuse were found among her father Thomas Markle’s possessions, saying her decision to prevent him from contacting her children was motivated by their safety.

The Sun, Daily Mail and The Telegraph reported on Friday that the alleged images had been discovered among Thomas Markle’s belongings at his former home in the Philippines.

In response to the reports, Meghan revealed that she had seen a letter submitted to London’s Metropolitan Police in 2018 that contained similar allegations against her father.

“It made troubling and disturbing allegations against my father and I was given assurances that these were being investigated,” Meghan said.

She subsequently expressed concern over the latest reports and the potential impact on children who may have been harmed.

“I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed,” she said in a statement.

Meghan and Prince Harry have two children, Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five. The duchess said her decision to maintain distance from her father and deny him access to the children should be understood in the context of her concerns about their protection.

She said she hoped it could “now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them.”

Thomas Markle did not attend his daughter’s wedding to Prince Harry at Windsor Castle in May 2018. Harry is the second son of King Charles III and has been estranged from his brother, Prince William, the heir to the throne.

The couple relinquished their royal duties and moved away from Britain in 2020 following a bitter rift with the royal family.

In her statement, Meghan also called for justice and emphasised the need to prioritise the welfare of children.

“Although the breadth of what has now been uncovered is more sickening than one could ever imagine, my sincerest hope is that justice will be fully served and that the priority remains the safety and protection of innocent children,” she added.

The reports have brought renewed scrutiny to the longstanding estrangement between Meghan and her father. The allegations reported by the newspapers have not been independently established in the information provided.
