WHO: Nigeria Records No Active Ebola Cases as Patient, Husband Move to Switzerland
WHO Africa chief Mohamed Janabi says Nigeria has no Ebola cases following the patient’s evacuation to Switzerland, while 52 contacts remain under monitoring.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases following the evacuation of the confirmed patient and her husband to Switzerland.
The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi, made this known on Monday through a statement on his official X handle, explaining that Nigeria would continue monitoring 52 contacts linked to the case.
He added that Switzerland would take over the patient’s medical care and follow up on her husband, who was identified as contact number 53.
Janabi said the evacuation took place earlier on Monday morning and confirmed that both individuals were Swiss citizens.
He noted that the patient was clinically stable following the successful efforts of Nigerian medical teams, who managed her through the acute phase of the illness and stabilised her condition before the evacuation.
The WHO official praised the Federal Government, healthcare professionals, clinicians, emergency responders and other partners for their contributions to managing the case, describing the outcome as a remarkable achievement.
According to him, the response highlighted Africa’s public health expertise, resilience and leadership, particularly when countries work together to address health emergencies.
However, Janabi cautioned that the evacuation did not remove the need for continued vigilance, emphasising the importance of contact tracing, monitoring and other public health measures.
He said Nigeria would continue following up on 52 contacts, while Swiss authorities would oversee the patient’s ongoing care and monitor her husband, the 53rd contact.
