Catholic Priest Sparks Reactions as He Leads Church Worshippers in Song for Obi, Kwankwaso
A viral video shows a Catholic priest leading worshippers in an Igbo song supporting Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
A Catholic priest has stirred political interest after leading worshippers in a church service in a song endorsing Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), is expected to contest alongside Kwankwaso as his running mate.
In a video making the rounds on X, the priest is seen directing members of the congregation to sing an Igbo-language song proclaiming the NDC as a better political platform.
The song goes: “Party Peter Obi ka mma; Party Kwankwaso, ka mma!” which translates to “Peter Obi’s party is better; Kwankwaso’s party is better.”
The development comes against the backdrop of increasing political engagements by religious leaders as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
While some clerics have openly expressed support for political candidates, others have taken positions on issues surrounding religious representation in government.
In August, Islamic cleric Sani Jingir reportedly urged Muslims to vote for a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in the 2027 elections.
Jingir made the appeal at a mass wedding organised by the Kano State Government for 1,500 couples, where he encouraged Muslims to vote in a way that reflects their numerical strength in Nigeria.
Tinubu and his Vice-President, Kashim Shettima, are both Muslims and currently occupy the country’s highest executive offices.
The arrangement differs from Nigeria’s informal tradition of religious balancing, which usually involves pairing a Muslim presidential candidate with a Christian running mate.
Kwankwaso had condemned Jingir’s remarks in a post on X.
In a separate development, the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has thrown its weight behind Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
The group announced its endorsement at its 2026 synod in Abuja, attended by SGF George Akume and Information Minister Mohammed Idris.
Delegates representing the conference’s six geopolitical zones reportedly authorised its President-General, Leonard Kawas, to make the announcement.
Kawas said the CBCN had members in 52 countries, with 950 canonical bishops in Nigeria.
He also recalled that the conference had expressed reservations about the APC’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket during the 2023 elections.
However, he said Tinubu had impressed the group by appointing Christians to strategic positions in his administration, adding that the president had demonstrated a willingness to accommodate Nigeria’s diversity.
“We are here today to reassure him of our solid support. We are standing with him in prayers and advocacy for the good programmes he has brought forth for the liberation of Nigeria,” Kawas said.
He further declared: “We stand with the president today, and as long as he is willing to be our president and even come in 2027, we will still be standing with him.”
