‘Visit the Remaining 33 States’: Obi Questions Tinubu After Akwa Ibom Overnight Stay
Obi urges Tinubu to visit 33 other states after his Akwa Ibom overnight stay and account for ₦15.8tn in subsidy savings and over $100bn in loans.
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to take his visits beyond Akwa Ibom and tour the other 33 states of the federation.
Obi made the challenge in a Saturday post on X after Tinubu spent a night in Akwa Ibom State, describing the overnight stay as a “second term presidential sleep” ahead of the 2027 general election.
While congratulating Tinubu for spending the night outside Lagos and Abuja, Obi urged the president to make such visits an opportunity to meet Nigerians and give an account of his administration’s achievements.
He expressed hope that the Akwa Ibom trip would encourage Tinubu to visit the remaining states, interact with their residents and explain how the Federal Government had utilised its available resources.
“I sincerely hope this visit will inspire you to travel to the remaining 33 states of the federation, spend time with the people and, more importantly, explain what your administration has done with the ₦15.8 trillion saved from the removal of fuel subsidy, the over $100 billion you have borrowed, the increased revenues accruing to the government from taxing Nigerians, and the additional government revenues which your administration celebrated last year as having surpassed its target,” Obi said.
Obi further demanded answers on the administration’s performance in tackling poverty and improving education, healthcare and electricity supply.
He questioned how many Nigerians had been brought out of poverty, how many children previously out of school had returned to classrooms and how many functional primary healthcare centres had been established.
The former Anambra governor also asked about improvements in power supply, referencing Tinubu’s earlier declaration that Nigerians should not vote for him if his government failed to address the electricity challenge.
Addressing the issue of insecurity, Obi said the government needed to explain its efforts to protect Nigerians, noting that the country remains among the most terrorised nations in the world.
“Mr President, Nigerians deserve answers. They deserve to know what has been done with the resources entrusted to your government,” Obi said.
He added that his vision of a New Nigeria would rest on accountability, transparency and the tangible benefits of public resources to citizens.
Tinubu had on Friday informed supporters at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, that he would spend the night in Akwa Ibom. He called it a “second term presidential sleep” and expressed confidence that he would secure re-election in 2027.
